Boost for BeltLine
June 22, 2010
The Atlanta BeltLine got a $5 million boost from Sarah and Jim Kennedy/PATH Foundation and Kaiser Permanente. The organizations are donating $2.5 million each to the BeltLine Partnership Capital Campaign to support the building of the Eastside Trail. Above is our favorite map of the planned BeltLine route (we ran a two-part series on the BeltLine a few weeks ago). The big plan is to develop a new modern streetcar or light-rail transit system along a 22-mile loop of historic rail lines. Alongside the new transit will be multi-use trails plus plenty of parks. Jim Kennedy, chairman of Cox Enterprises, co-chair of the Atlanta BeltLine campaign (and cycling enthusiast), explains his donation: "We have always wanted a trail like this in the city and this will be used and enjoyed by thousands of Atlantans each day." |
