EDGEWOOD REVIVAL
August 10, 2010
If you don't think of Downtown Atlanta when you're trying to come up with new bars or lounges for happy hour or a late night drink, think again. Edgewood Avenue between the Connector and Boulevard has become a favorite for locals in recent months. Here?s Noni?s Italian Bar & Deli, a perfect example of the one- and two-story commercial buildings along the corridor that are remnants of segregation-era Atlanta, when African-Americans built a thriving neighborhood along Auburn and Edgewood Avenues. Central Atlanta Progress economic development veep Tahmida Shamsuddin tells us investment on this corridor is a no-brainer, connecting the core of Downtown to the west and Old Fourth Ward and Inman Park to the east. |
One of the newest additions to the neighborhood is The Sound Table, a laid-back lounge, bar and restaurant by Darren Carr, owner of Top Flr in Midtown. The bi-level, brick-walled lounge serves food in an upstairs dining area and has a downstairs lounge where you can listen to DJs or sip cocktails at the bar. Noni?s Italian Bar & Deli is also a neighborhood favorite. Here are two of Downtown?s most ardent boosters: Tahmida and Ellen Mendelsohn, with Noni?s owner Matt Ruppert. We hear they're big fans of the Noni's meatball sub, which was voted Best in Atlanta by Atlanta magazine. |
