In Memory of Herman J Russell
In an industry filled with titans and personalities, we learned over the weekend about the loss of perhaps Atlanta's most humble and trailblazing commercial real estate success stories. HJ Russell & Co founder and patriarch Herman J Russell passed away after an extended illness over the weekend. The 83-year-old, who -- as Tony Wilbert notes, won practically every civic award there is to win in Atlanta, including ULI's prestigious Frank Carter Community Achievement Award in 2004 (here) -- built a construction and real estate empire that defined some of Atlanta's most iconic projects, including the Georgia Dome, Centennial Olympic Park and Georgia-Pacific Plaza, and also paved the way for minorities in Atlanta's CRE industry. Our thoughts are with his family and his staff.
