OUR FAULT?

The US blew up the world. At least that's the impression parts of Europe have toward this country when they consider commercial real estate investing here. So says ING's Greg Michaud, who heads up real estate finance. We snapped Greg at yesterday's ?Views From the Top? panel event at Phipps Tower in Buckhead. Organized by GSU's Real Estate Alumni Group and the Real Estate Investment Advisory Council, the panel featured Greg, Portman Holdings'Ambrish Baisiwala, and the Metro Chamber of Commerce's Jorge Fernandez waxing philosophic on foreign investments in CRE markets. Given the as yet to be unraveled CMBS issues, European investors are still ?gun shy? about the US market, Greg says.

Ambrish, addressing the crowd in a shelled-out floor of the new Buckhead tower, says he's seeing foreign investors evaluating the ?right time? to buy assets in America again. Other than the need of the State of Georgia to improve incentives to lure companies here, Jorge says the area's biggest weakness is ?under marketing Atlanta,? which affects how foreign investors view the metro area. ?People still ask me about Gone with the Wind,? Jorge says.
