The New (Old) Buckhead Theatre
May 18, 2010
Last weekend the new Buckhead Theatre hosted its first event, a fundraiser for the March of Dimes. That's a long way from the venue?s original opening in 1928 as a vaudeville and film house (stars like Gloria Swanson appeared there).
We snapped the renovated theatre on Roswell Road, now owned by one of Atlanta's business legends, Aaron Rents founder Charlie Loudermilk. Charlie bought the landmark (aka the Coca-Cola Roxy Theater in recent decades) and spent more than $6M renovating it. A grand opening to the public is planned for June. Charlie took over retail space on either side of the theatre to widen the entrance and expand the lobby. Inside, it's decorated in cream, burgundy, and dark wood tones. A private event space is upstairs and the theatre expects to host concerts and musicals.
Sentimental detail: Loudermilk used to watch movies at the Buckhead Theatre as a boy.
Then it became the Roxy...
The Buckhead Alliance is raising money to renovate the City of Atlanta park across from the Buckhead Theatre, which has been renamed Charlie Loudermilk Park. The rendering above shows the vision. Commemorative bricks are on sale for $100. To learn more:http://www.loudermilkpark.com/buyabrick.html. |
