California Data Center Operator Buys North Atlanta Facility
A California-based data center provider is entering Atlanta's suburbs thanks to a major computer chip maker.
Server Farm Realty purchased a 150K SF facility in Suwanee at 305 Satellite Blvd. from chip maker AMD for an undisclosed price, the online industry trade journal Datacenter Dynamics reports. While it was not clear if AMD would remain a tenant in the facility under new ownership, an AMD spokesperson told Datacenter Dynamics the purchase has no impact on AMD's operations there.
“Our goal is to help our customers manage everything physical in the digital world so they can focus on their core business,” Serverfarm CEO Avner Papouchado said in a press release. “305 Satellite Boulevard will provide an exciting opportunity for Server Farm to enhance the business of existing and new clients.”
In 2011, AMD retrofitted 305 Satellite into a data center for some $25M as part of a larger plan to consolidate its data center facilities around the world into two locations: Suwanee and Malaysia, according to Datacenter Dynamics.
The company highlighted Atlanta as an attractive market given affordable power costs and low risk for natural disasters. Serverfarm operates more than 1M SF of data centers across the U.S., including in Charlotte, Chicago, Santa Clara, California, and Toronto.
