The Fundamental Difference In On And Off-Campus Housing
Panelists at our Austin University Development and Student Housing event agreed that all student housing must please the 'rents (because, you know, they pay the rent).
On-campus and off-campus properties measure success fundamentally differently, Page principal Talmadge Smith (here with SpawGlass president Roger Berry) says.
Success for on-campus housing is measured by student success, SMU dean of residence life and student housing Troy Behrens says. GPAs and retention rates dominate on-campus housing whereas amenities dominate off-campus.
Housing is the top reason students do not choose a university, Talmadge says. To rectify that, academic mixed-use and programming has increased in popularity in the past five to seven years.
Troy says the trick is to make kids want to live on-campus, even when universities mandate it.
