GREEN CAN BE CHEAP
June 2, 2011
Those of you who were at our Baltimore State of the Market remember The Martin Architectural Group's Mike Rosen (above, at his office in Philly) winning lunch during our Q&A. Yesterday we caught up with him (to talk real estate, not digestion): he tells us going green doesn't have to come with sticker shock, especially if you examine a site's available natural resources (such as exposure to the sun) before starting construction. Costs jump when sustainability becomes an afterthought, Mike says, and his job is to make sure developers consider energy saving strategies in the planning stage. Locally, he's working on McHenry Row with Mark Sapperstein, the office portion of which just got LEED Gold. |
Mike just got back from a two-week trip to China (we love the coat he brought back). He tells us the country's undergoing a massive construction boom, and he's designing industrial parks, residential projects, and master-planned communities. His firm's biggest challenge there: showing it can replicate its American successes. |
