LOCAL TO DESIGN 9/11 MEMORIAL
People call us The Monumental City. It follows that Baltimore's Ziger/Snead was selected yesterday to lead the design on the state's official 9/11 memorial, beating out six competitors from Washington, California, and NY. The memorial, located on the World Trade Center's Inner Harbor plaza, will feature two 22-foot steel beams from the twin towers as its centerpiece. Ziger got the nod because of its work on projects like the Brown Center at the Maryland Institute College of Art, the Living Classrooms Foundation on Baltimore's waterfront, and the Maryland Historical Society's New Gallery. Construction starts this spring, with a dedication on the tenth anniversary of the September 11 attacks.
