MANEKIN LEAPS INTO MULTIFAMILY

| Now that Baltimore CRE mainstay Dick Manekin has been with Chesapeake Real Estate Group's Baltimore office for most of 2011, a lot of news is about to break: The firm is close to acquiring a property just north of Harbor East. Plus, he plans to go where no Manekin has gone before: multifamily. |

| We spoke with Dick yesterday while he and wife Marsha awaited a flight from the San Francisco airport en route to home in Owings Mills after a Thanksgiving visit with their sons. He tells us Chesapeake is in final negotiations on the Harbor East North building, following its recent acquisition of the nearby 1100 Fleet St, a vacant warehouse the firm plans to turn into restaurants and retail. He says he and Chesapeake Baltimore principals Doug Schmidt and Neil Tucker are looking into other specialty retail opportunities, as well as urban infill mixed-use apartments and retail, much of it transit-oriented development, though none of them have worked in multifamily before. (We hear it's like riding a bike, except dogs aren't allowed on bikes and are allowed in some apartments.) |
