OWINGS MILLS MALL WANTS TO BE "OPEN"
Owings Mills Mall is looking for redemption with a new open-air format, says Kimco Mid-Atlantic prez Tom Simmons, who's speaking at Bisnow's Baltimore Retail Real Estate Summit on Monday. Sign up now!

Tom says his firm is one of Baltimore County's largest landlords, with3M SF across 17 shopping centers, including its new ownership stake (joining GGP) in Owings Mills Mall. The acquisition seemed like a departure from its neighborhood and community shopping center model, but it's actually right on target, since the JV plans to redevelop the property into a pedestrian-friendly, hybrid power center, including large and small boxes and a lifestyle component. (As long as there's food, we're in.)

Tom expects to present the new concept in early spring and says current zoning and strong existing roadways and infrastructure should allow the project to move forward quickly without adding burden to the congested Reisterstown Road corridor. The 25-year-old, enclosed mall has declined as shoppers headed to Towson and Columbia instead, but Tom expects the new format to win them back. Also speaking on Monday: Continental Realty prez Gene Parker Jr., JPB Partners' Mike Kalinock, Brown Craig Turner Architects' Bryce Turner, and Miles & Stockbridge's Michele Cohen.
