Real Estate Families!
You are your brother's keeper. And lots of times in Baltimore, you're also his co-worker. There are real estate families all over the area; here are a few clans in the biz:
The Pinkards
Pinkard Properties prez Katherine Bowers and her dad, principal Greg Pinkard, will move into a new, shared office on Tuesday. (Who gets to choose the decor?) Their time building sandcastles in Naples, Fla., when Katherine was 6 (above) turned out to be foreshadowing of their real estate careers together.
Here’s the pair skiing in Colorado about 10 years ago. Katherine is the fourth generation of Pinkards in Baltimore real estate. (You can imagine the Thanksgiving conversations.) Her great-grandfather Walter C. Pinkard formed W.C. Pinkard & Co in the 1920s, dealing in rural land. When BWI plopped down in the middle of some of that farmland, he switched to commercial real estate. Grandfather Walter Pinkard kept the company chugging, and it became Colliers Pinkard under Uncle Wally Pinkard. In ’07, Wally joined other Colliers affiliates to become Cassidy Turley, of which he’s chairman.
Greg amicably left the company during that merger, but after five years, some clients still wanted to work with him. So Katherine left her wealth management gig at PNC and formed Pinkard Properties with her dad two years ago (when the above was snapped) with Katherine as president. Greg's other brothers are in real estate, too. Katherine’s Uncle Bobby—you know him as Bob Pinkard—is a principal at The Pinkard Group in DC, and Uncle Peter Pinkard is a managing partner with MCB Real Estate in Baltimore.
The Smiths
MacKenzie Commercial’s Karen Deeley and four of her five siblings are in Baltimore commercial real estate. Here's Karen and sister Lyn Jablonski, a VP at TriAlliance with their mother, Jackie, who worked in the business for a year but found her hands full with six kids. (Leasing and acquisitions have nothing on diapers and braces.)
And the brothers: TriAlliance president Chris Smith; Cassidy Turley Columbia managing director Andrew Smith; Terry Smith, the only non-real estate guy; and Cassidy Turley corporate advisory services' Jamie Smith.
And in their younger years: Jamie, Karen, Lyn, Andrew, Chris, and Terry, who got his real estate license years ago (just to join the crowd, Karen says). The next generation is at it, too. Jamie’s oldest son, Eric, is a real estate lawyer at Venable, and Karen’s daughter-in-law, Breahn Deeley, works at CBRE.
The Bozzutos
Dad Tom is still going strong as CEO of multifamily giant Bozzuto Group, though son Toby quickly has become one of the faces of the industry in Baltimore and DC. The Bozzuto name is everywhere, from the family firm's own developments (Union Wharf, The Fitzgerald, and a 275-unit JV with Solstice Partners that’ll break ground in Locust Point on the old GE site this fall) to its huge management portfolio like McHenry Row, The Zenith, and Arbors at Baltimore Crossroads.
