WHAT'S HAPPENING IN CHINA
July 1, 2011
Yesterday at our Office of the Future event in DC, Gensler's Jordan Goldstein gave us an update on what's happening in China: over the next decade, there will be 221 cities with a population exceeding one million (Europe has 35), and the country could build a new city the size of Chicago every year 'til 2030. Jordan's team is involved in several building projects, including the Shanghai Tower, which will be the second-tallest building in the world when completed. It's one-third finished and goes ?beyond LEED Platinum,? with 45 wind turbines on the roof and carbon dioxide reduction equivalent to 29,000 trees. He also says the Chinese planning process is much different than in the States: one of his projects got approved in one three-hour hearing; construction started the next week. |
