Moda Living's proposals for a 42-storey rented residential tower at Broad Street, Birmingham, have been approved by city planners.

The £183M proposals, submitted in September, mean redevelopment of the Tramps nightclub site. The 42-storey tower of 480 luxury rental apartments will also have a gym, residents’ lounge and 200-metre rooftop running track.

Building work is due to start this year with completion in 2021.

The project is funded by Apache Capital Partners and designed by Birmingham-based Glenn Howells Architects.

Moda is reported to be looking for further sites in the city.

A tower has been envisaged on the site since 2006 when permission was granted for a 40-storey scheme. However, planning permissions have not so far turned into completed schemes.

The site falls into Birmingham's so-called Central Ridge Zone in which tall buildings are permitted.

Today Birmingham has four structures over 300 feet tall — with the BT Tower, dating from 1966, still holding the record at 499 feet. Moda's Broad Street tower will be the tallest residential structure at 433 feet.

One residential tower over 300 feet is under construction at Left Bank, and two more have been approved.
