A NAIOP First
November 13, 2012
Never before had NAIOP tapped a multifamily developer to receive the Distinguished Real Estate Award during its annual gala. But Thursday at the Westin Waterfront, AvalonBay Communities took the honor. Before about 1,000 guests, AvalonBay EVP Bill McLaughlin accepted the honor for: responsible, sustainable development; charitable activities, and community betterment. Since ’93, AvalonBay has invested $1.3B to build 6,600 apartments in the metro area and has another 2,500 apartments in development. |
The Beal Cos president Robert Beal with Karen Richards, who accepted the Edward H Linde Public Service Award for her late husband Lowell Richards. Lowell, who was instrumental in guiding the development shaping Boston for the 21st century, was Massport’s chief development officer at the time of his death—way too soon—in February. During his 13 years at Massport, he led strategic and master planning for Logan International Airport, the East Boston waterfront, and the South Boston Seaport. Karen’s acceptance speech was greeted by an emotional standing ovation. |
Federal Realty Boston president Don Briggs— with colleagues Melissa Rivers and Tim Mount— was happy even before joining the party. After several years of planning, construction is well under way at Federal’s $1.5B, 5M SF Assembly Row mixed-use development in Somerville: AvalonBay is building 450 rental apartments and Federal is working on 300k SF of retail that will include a Legal Sea Foods with an AMC theater as an anchor. Federal is also building rental apartments on a site it owns in Chelsea. |
