CELEBRATING POST OFFICE SQUARE
Commonwealth Ventures? Dick Galvin with Goedecke & Co's Peter Goedecke
Happy 20th to the luxurious park at Post Office Square, the brain child of developer Norman Leventhal and other industry and public sector friends. The Boston Preservation Alliance marked the occasion with its annual auction there last Thursday. We snapped the evening?s host, Commonwealth Ventures? Dick Galvin, with Goedecke & Co's Peter Goedecke. As owner of 185 Franklin Street on the Square, Dick will soon to start a major renovation that will add ground floor retail and restaurants to the former New England Telephone building. Peter says the rehab will bring new life to the neighborhood. Previously, the most life he ever saw around the Art Deco building was when ?phone company workers went on strike.?

Alliance Board member Minxie Fannin with Alexander & Feingold?s Jim Alexander, who says from his architect?s perch, development is picking up. This month, construction started on the Westwood Library designed by his firm. In June, they'll complete design work on the $65M Methuen High School, after which the project will go out for construction bids. Jim tells us there may be a new multifamily high-rise getting into development soon downtown. As for Post Office Square, Jim says it has the ?pinnacle of urban parks.?
