Federal Thinks Big
June 7, 2011
Federal Realty Investment Trust?s Don Briggs doesn't do small. He's overseeing a $1.5B mixed-use project in DC and what could be a $2B expansion of Assembly Square in Somerville. |
We snapped Don and Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone at what will be the home of Assembly Row @ Assembly Square. Federal has permits for 5M SF: 2,100 housing units, 1.75M SF of offices, and 500k SF of retail. The $350M Phase I will be 450 rental apartments and 280k SF of retail. Don tells us he expects to break ground late ?11 or early ?12. He calls the Boston retail market a prime development target because it's still underserved. And overall, Boston is one of the nation's healthier CRE markets, just not as hot as DC. In North Bethesda, Don is managing the development of a $1.5B, 3.5M SF mixed-use development at the White Flint Metro Station.
