IKEA Expanding in Boston
Thursday, the Stoughton zoning board approved a plan by IKEA to add 59k SF to its 357k SF store. On April 11, the town planning board will consider the proposal, and if all goes well, IKEA hopes to start one year of construction this fallon its only Massachusetts location, spokesman Joseph Roth tells Bisnow. IKEA has also leased 101k SF nearby at 1000 Technology Center Blvd (a former Reebok warehouse) from landlord ASB.
Joseph says the growing operation will help IKEAs very, very successful Stoughton location better serve customers. For 15 years, the companyhad considered building a store at Assembly Row in Somerville, a big mixed-use project being developed by Federal Realty. It had secured all necessary entitlements, but they were about to expire last year and IKEAwasn'tready to commit to construction. Now Federal has IKEAs 15 acres under agreement to purchase. Dont be surprised if IKEA pops up in a completely different location when the time is right, Joseph says.(No doubt it arrives on a chair ergonomically designed for said popping up.)
