Order + Chaos

Richard Bertman, the ?B? in CBT Architects, is not only working on the largest CRE projects being developed in town, he's preparing for an exhibit of his sculpture to open Friday at the Center for the Arts in the South End. For him, the art work he's done since he was two, and the architecture he's practiced since graduating from Harvard, MIT, and UC Berkley 45 years ago, inform each other. They're about creating richness and interest that's also harmonious and comprehensible. Tuesday, he was installing ?Park Street Station?(above) that squeaks when it moves and reflects his feelings about taking the T: it's busy, moving, and rushed. |
?I'm the one with the beard,? he said. The sculpture, ?Grounded,? is a bird that can't seem to take off. He says it will be in the show and speaks to his frustration of not always being able to accomplish everything he wants. What he's learned through his artwork: don't be too critical at first, stay open, keep exploring, and let things happen. He's certainly got something going to have amassed this list: Atlantic Wharf, the new Liberty Mutual office, the Mandarin, the Pru redesign and 111 Huntington Ave. |
