Prefab: What's NEU?
April 5, 2010
The panel for Northeastern's first confab on prefab featured Resolution 4 Architecture?s Joe Tanney, MIT?s Peter Roth, Free Green?s David Wax, NEU?s Ivan Rupnik, director of the architecture school George Thrush, former MoMa curator Peter Christensen, Wiederspahn Architecture?s Peter Wiederspahn, and Utile?s Matthew Littell. They discussed how while much residential prefab construction is now used for single family housing, popularizing this home delivery system for multifamily can address the need for more affordable housing. George says quality can be maintained and even improved yet costs cut 30 to 50%. In cities like Cranston, with lots of underused industrial space, he said prefab could be one way to convert that space and keep the cost down. |
