Rather than taking the more traditional approach of establishing a foothold in his Boston HQ first, Marcus and partner Nick Caponehave landed projects in Delhi, India, and Carrillo, Costa Rica. Through LinkedIn, Marcus says they connected with Punj Development's Brij Punj who hired the Fort Point-based firm to design a 33-room boutique hotel for business travelers that is now under construction in Delhi with delivery planned for next fall. The design features a super-insulated rain screen fa ade to promote energy efficiency.

Marcus says that SA is also master planning a 1,500-acre resortin Carrillo for Europacific Partners. He connected with this client the old-fashioned way, at a party on Cape Cod. The resort will have two, 200-room hotels, up to 50 villas that are 2,500 to 3,000 SF each, 14 20-acre horse farms, an 18-hole golf course, and a private air strip. SA will design the villas and horse farms. The firm is also designing a 30-unit passivehaus apartment building inSouth Boston with live work space for artists and small businesses. The client (who Marcus can't name because he's still going through due diligence) hopes to complete permitting by next spring.

Last year, Marcus also formed Linnean Solutions with Jim Newman who for many years was an online strategist for BuildingGreen based in Brattleboro, Vt. Linnean analyzes the performance data of buildings and their sites to increase the energy efficiency and financial returns of properties. Last month, they completed an energy audit for the Boston Architectural College and the Yestermorrow Design Build School. Marcus formed his firm after spending four years as a director of institutional architecture for Sasaki where he focused on designing college and university academic buildings, dorms and sports/recreation facilities.
