Medical Device Company Expands Facilities In Bedford, Devens
A Spanish medical device manufacturer has expanded operations in Massachusetts with a new lab facility and a logistics center.
Barcelona-based Werfen celebrated the opening of its new 130K SF, two-story lab and software building at 180 Hartwell Ave. in Bedford, according to a press release Tuesday. The new building brings the campus' footprint to 490K SF, the Boston Business Journal reported.
The company has invested $51M into the expansion that makes room for another 350 employees at the campus, bringing the total to more than 1,400. The property is one of the largest footprints the company has across its real estate portfolio.
“With the exception of a couple of other locations nationally, (Massachusetts) is really ground zero for medical devices,” Mark Olsen, chief manufacturing and supply chain officer at Werfen, told the BBJ. “And also we need highly technical, highly trained people. So we find the university system here is excellent. It works out real well to do business here in Massachusetts.”
The company also has plans to move into a 230K SF distribution center in Devens from its 18 Independence Road location in the same area. The company plans to move into the new facility in the first quarter of next year.
Werfen acquired Instrumentation Laboratory in 1991, and in 2007 Instrumentation Laboratory purchased 180 Hartwell Ave. from landlord Vinco Properties Inc. for $30M, the BBJ reported. In, 2021, the company decided to keep the two entities under the same name and brand as Wenfren.
