MIT Moves Ahead With First Part Of Kendall Square Initiative
The Cambridge Planning Board heard public comment yesterday about MIT's plan to build a 450-bed graduate student tower at 292 Main St in Kendall Square. The project is part of the university’s Kendall Square Initiative South of Main (SoMa) plan, in the works since 2010, and its first development to move through design review, reports the Boston Business Journal. All together, SoMa will be five buildings on 6.75 acres.
The tower will include 25 stories of student housing beneath two levels of mechanical systems and atop a three-level podium that will include community and academic space with a 200-seat auditorium. The building will also sport ground-floor retail, an MIT admissions office and five levels of academic office space to house MIT’s Innovation and Entrepreneurship program. [BBJ]
