DIGGING OUT OF THE HOLE
Retail trade was one of several sectors showing modest gains in the past year, contributing to a slight turnaround in North Carolina?s economic fortunes, UNC economist John Connaughton tells us. John's latest quarterly economic report shows North Carolina?s Gross State Product rose about 2.7% from last year, and he's anticipating that trend will continue. The retail sector rose about 2%, which is exactly the number that Childress Klein Properties' David Haggart has been quoting publicly. Retail sales locally are still just above 2008 levels, David says, and we may be in for at least a few more years of struggle before we see genuine improvement. |
