JOB CREATION KEEPS QC HOPEFUL
July 28, 2011
The first half of '11 shows Charlotte is on track for a return to a strong economy, even if it's been slower than anticipated, Charlotte Chamber prez Bob Morgan tells us. Fortunately, ?outsiders? still feel positive about Charlotte's future, he says. London-based fDi magazine recently ranked the city 5th of 405 large, Western Hemisphere cities in ?economic vitality.? (We're blushing. Cheers, London. You're not so bad yourself.) The first six months yielded 541 new or expanding firms, creating 5,459 jobs. While the job creation number is not the highest Charlotte's seen, Bob says, first-time jobless claims for unemployment (through May) are down 20% from the same time last year. These new or expanding firms rep the largest number since '08, ?reflecting the strong entrepreneurial nature? of the Queen City. |
