Multifamily development company Gingko built a business model around making affordable rental housing cost effective not only for itself, but also for its tenants. Ginkgo?s Phil Payne was doing ?sustainable? before sustainable was cool. (Like being the first kid on his block to have a bike.) His company worked to save on water, electricity, heating, and air, more than 20 years ago. If an apartment complex can keep those costs down, then that keeps rents down. It's easy math, he tells us.
