North Carolina has now qualified to receive $461M in federal money that's expected to shave 12 minutes off the three-hour train trip from Charlotte to Raleigh. Spending the money, now available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, was approved after the N.C. Railroad Co reached an agreement with Norfolk Southern and Amtrak to do improvements on the track between Charlotte and Raleigh. Supporters see it as a jobs stimulator. Others wonder what the real impact will be. Tradd Commercial's Eddie Blanton tells us it could improve Charlotte's relations with the Triangle. Otherwise he sees the overall benefit as net neutral for both communities. Providence Real Estate Advisors Clay Durkin agrees, though that doesn?t mean Charlotte shouldn?t get its share of the cash. ?I?ll take mine in twenties,? he says.
