THE NEXT SENIOR LIVING MARKET
November 10, 2011
Charlotte's senior living projects often hit their limits at 300 units. But in China, try 10 times that. (When your demographics include 1.3B people on the planet's third largest land mass, your development options run deep.) |
NY-based Perkins Eastman, along with its Charlotte office, is designing a 3,000-unit senior living project in China and is pursuing several more on a similar scale, Perkins? Charlotte principal-in-chargeDavid Segmiller (and his hypnotic sports coat) tells us. (We snapped David at a recent ULI conference in LA.) He couldn't disclose the development price, but it ventures something in the?hundreds of millions.? Driving the new development is the shiftfrom Chinese elders traditionally living with younger family members, he says; now more Chinese folks in their golden years are living on their own. But it's not in our fashion; US senior living units can hit1,600 SF versus about 750 SF in China. |
