TIME TO LIGHTEN UP
University Research Park

During its 44 years, University Research Park has attracted some of the biggest names in R&D. But it's been hamstrung by strict zoning that allowed little else. Area booster University City Partners wants the city to amend the zoning code to allow broader land uses within the 2,000-acre park. They include attached housing, restaurants, retail and hotels, says Mary Hopper, UCP chief. Now, most of the park?s massive tenants (like TIAA-CREF, above) have in-house food service. Under the proposal, restaurants could be built a convenient distance away. Visitors could stay at on-site hotels. And the amendment calls for preserving green space. A public hearing is set for April.
