UNC Green Design Ready for California Contest
UNC Charlotte students are putting the finishing touches on UrbanEden, a residential property that's the schools entry in the Solar Decathlon this fall in Southern California. It began work 18 months ago on this years entry, which will be judged on 10 categories of innovative sustainable design (and a javelin throw), once its shipped to California. Thats part of the contest, too: building it, taking it apart, shipping it, and then rebuilding it for the contest. The propertys prime sustainable feature, according to the students, is the inconspicuous precast concrete slabs that form the walls, which can block Charlottes most intense summer rays while storing heat on sunny winter days.
