Charlotte-based SEC General Contractors will build Shake Shack’s first North Carolina restaurant. Construction on the eatery is expected to start this month at Park Road Shopping Center, which opened in 1956 as Charlotte’s first open-air center.

SEC partner Kevan Smith said the restaurant will be 3.2K SF and is scheduled to be finished by early 2018. Shake Shack, which bills itself as a “modern-day roadside burger stand,” has more than 135 locations across 18 U.S. states plus D.C. and 12 countries.

SEC has worked in the Park Road Shopping before. The company renovated Charlotte Café after it was damaged in a 2015 fire, and it also built a martial arts studio there. Retail developer and owner Edens purchased the 407K SF Park Road Shopping Center in 2011 for more than $20M.

"We are excited about this project and pleased that SEC has been chosen to construct the new building," SEC President David Fry said in a press release. "We're also grateful for the confidence in our firm that Edens demonstrated by recommending SEC for the project."

Some of the SEC’s other local projects include City BBQ and Level Office, Charlotte’s first national co-working space
