Lowe's Fires 125 Tech Workers, Most At Mooresville HQ
Home improvement retailer Lowe's laid off about 125 corporate tech workers, mostly at its HQ in Mooresville. Many of the IT job functions are being sent to Bangalore, India, where the company already employs about 1,000 IT workers, the Charlotte Observer reports.
The move is the latest round of job cuts for Lowe's. Nearly 100 corporate tech jobs went away last fall, and in early 2017, the company cut about 2,400 full-time jobs, mostly at its stores. Then it eliminated another 500 corporate jobs, mostly in Mooresville, but also in Wilkesboro.
Last month, the retailer posted disappointing sales and earnings numbers for Q1 2016, and has had long-standing difficulties doing as well as rival Home Depot. As for Bangalore, the city is known as the Silicon Valley of India, with many transnational tech firms — including IBM, Dell and Oracle — growing their presence there.
