CHA Blasted For Lathrop Homes Proposal
Related Midwest revealed its final plan for redeveloping the Lathrop Homes public housing project at a community meeting last night. Attendees had several questions about public housing set-asides and 1st Ward Ald. Joe Moreno promised to block the project unless a percentage of the planned residential units were marked for public housing.
Moreno wants the JV of Related, Bickerdike Redevelopment and Heartland Housing to build 900 public housing units on the North Side to replace what was lost at Lathrop before he signs off on the deal, according to DNA Info. Lathrop, a national historic landmark, opened in the 1930s with 925 public housing units. Today, 100 residents still live at Lathrop but the majority of units are boarded up.
Related's plans call for 1,116 residential units at Lathrop, with 400 set aside for public housing. [DNA]
