BOMA Smart Grid Launch
It's just a pilot program, but if it works, some 260 buildings in downtown Chicago could be outfitted with a new technology that would construct a virtual generator using CBD buildings as a virtual electric grid. Sound wonky? It is.
We snapped Citizen's Utility Board's David Kolata after a signing ceremony for the Smart Grid. He explained that buildings would be able to control demand for electricity and earn money by quickly reducing energy use during peak hours. BOMA Chicago, the Illinois Science & Technology Coalition, and the Citizens Utility Board of Chicago signed a MOU with the Korea Smart Grid Institute, The Korean Smart Grid Association, and private companies LG, KT, and Samsung. The agreement with the Korean companies will allow them to show off their technology in a $20M public-private partnership.
BOMA EVP Michael Cornicelli tells us 12 CBD buildings will be selected to be a part of the pilot program, beginning in summer 2011. The pilot also requires the creation of a Network Operating Center, where PJM Interconnection, the grid operator, will relay signals to the buildings about when to reduce their energy use. We presume it will know to boost signals for the Mad Men premiere. |
