CARBON NEUTRAL BY 2030

Last night, while many organizations were trying to predict what's in store for 2010, the local USGBC chapter met at the Chicago Regional Council of Carpenters to work on 2030. We snapped Helen J. KesslerCassandra Francis, and OWP/P | Cannon Design's Rand Ekman. The group's pushing for all new buildings to be carbon neutral in 20 years; at first, it'll aim for 60% and ratchet up 10% every five years. Helen is working as a LEED-AP on education projects for CPS, as well as two seminaries in the Chicago area. She says schools find green helps attract students. How does it stack up with other student perks? Look for a future issue comparing the merits of green building vs. Nintendo Wii.

Colliers Bennett & Kahnweiler's Linda McDonagh, Lindy Schrik, and Ben Bischmann are helping in the challenge. The team just submitted its application for LEED-Gold  on 2200 Cabot Drive in Lisle. Renovation there included a retrofit of the lighting and plumbing, all-green cleaning solutions, and an EnergyStar rating of 82.
