Canstruction!
The Greater Chicago Food Depository's slogan is ?One can make a difference,? so last night's Canstruction event at the Merchandise Mart must have made tens of thousands of differences. |
After the verdict came in from the jury, the big winners were Mortenson Construction's Idris Oladipo and John Zhang, who were joined by Skidmore Owings and Merrill's Gabriel Wong , who is making his best Zoolander face, and Alexandra Thewis. The team took home the jury's favorite award and two awards for best structure for its ?CAN-tilever with Souper Graphics.? The team did the project just like it would an actual building, starting with drawings, then going to the contractor for proposals on how to execute the design. John had the supports for the structure made with a water and plastic technique instead of by hand. |
Sometimes the biggest can be the best. At least that was the case fro Eckenhoff Saunders Architects Jack Ratza, Samantha Dba Sonia Zacatenco and Matthew S. Linn, who won two awards for Most Cans and Most Desired Items with their Structure ?Food Bank,? pictured below, which was made of 7,150 cans. In real life, they're working on the North Shore University Hospital, along with a number of churches and synagogues. Here's a few of the structures in their full glory: |
