 How Now, Purple Hotel?
Purple Hotel
The latest twist in the Purple Hotel saga came this week when the Lincolnwood Village Board voted to delay the storied but decaying property’s demolition. The site of the hotel, whether the purple structure is there or not, will be auctioned next month along with two adjacent parcels, and Skokie developer Jake Weiss has told the village that he can redevelop the structure once he acquires all of the parcels at the sale (he already owns the note on the hotel site itself). If his plans fall through, however, the demolition could go forward. Built in 1960, the highly visible and highly purple property had a number of incarnations as a hotel before closing for good in the mid-2000s. Since then, efforts to redevelop the site have been stymied by hard times. Jake tells us that he believes the Purple Hotel can be redeveloped into boutique hotel with restaurants and retail outlets, aspiring to be the sort of destination it was in its heyday in the early '60s. It's going to stay purple, of course.
