The International Council of Shopping Centers blew through Chicago like a windstorm last Thursday and Friday. But we did our best to harness the energy. Retail guru Debra Hazel detailed how international retailers are starting to gain a foothold on major US retail thoroughfares, like Michigan and Madison Avenues. British fashion store Top Shop recently signed a lease on the Mag Mile, and might be followed by others, like Australian jeweler Diva or Italian glove maker Seminetta. To clear up any confusion, Burger King is an American company—it simply married into the royal family.
On the show floor, we snapped Marcus & Millichaps' Michael Marks,Clinton Mitchell, and Steve Weinstock in their booth. Steve said sales of single-tenant buildings, like Walgreens, are up. The company also just sold Parrot Plaza at 1401 W. North Ave. in Melrose Park to Next Realty. The 6k SF center is home to a Chipotle and T-Mobile store.
Hamilton Partners' Todd Berlinghof, Greg Winner, and James Sheridan said they're seeing a lot of opportunities for 2011 and 2012. Near-term, they're listing space at Willowbrook Festival in Northbrook, Aurora Commons in Aurora, and Berkshire Place in Plainfield. They say many retailers are no longer looking for space for 2010 since the holiday season is approaching.
We caught up with Jameson Commercial's Deena Zimmerman,Adam Napp, and Andrew Magliochetti at Next Realty's afterparty at District Bar in River North. Deena just joined Jameson when her previous company's commercial division was acquired, bringing the firm up to 30 commercial brokers, which they've promised to tell us more about later this week.
We also snapped Jibway Development's Bruce Michael and Gledhill Properties' Thomas and Lizzie Gledhill. Bruce is in town from Troy, Mich. and he says the retail climate in Chicago is much healthier. He owns a few retail spaces in the Chicago area, including one in the West Loop. |
