New School; New SIOR Pre
USGBC-Chicago trekked out to Warrenville last night to check out the new Hubble Middle School, opened this year and slated for LEED-Gold certification. First order of business: Convince the English teachers we spelled LEED correctly. |
The 190k-SF building, designed by Legat Architects, has a capacity of 1100 students (1050 once you fill their brains with knowledge). Here's Legat's Paul Pessetti in the choir room, presumably singingHallelujah for coming in under budget. The room has recycled flooring and acoustic-absorbing walls. |
Why?s the library so dark? Because most of its light comes from daylight in those enormous windows. Legat also thought to use the entire school as a learning tool— students garden the green roof outside the library. They can also become tour guides, showing the public the different eco-friendly elements, from the low-flow urinals to the recycling facilities. |
