Pritzker, Cafaro Speak to Executives' Club
April 12, 2012
The Executives' Club of Chicago knows how to pack 'em in: Have Penny Pritzker and Debra Cafaro speak at the same luncheon at the Chicago Hyatt Regency in conjunction with the club's real estate committee. Penny, who knows a thing or two about really large real estate holdings, gave the introduction for Debra.
As CEO of Ventas for 13 years, Debra has led the REIT from a failing, one-tenant operation to the top publicly traded REIT that made acquisitions worth $12B in 2011. She told the audience about timely changes in the company's strategy to avoid value destruction, such as becoming "aggressively conservative" in '07 but assiduous in pursuing acquisitions in '11, thus taking advantage of good pricing and diversifying the company's holdings, mitigating risk. Debra's outlook: CRE is even more becoming a story of winners and losers. As for the economy, "if you want certainty, you're living in the wrong decade." Debra is pictured after her talk with Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz's Robin Panovka, U of C Law School dean Michael Schill, and Amsted Industries' Stephen Smith.
