THE FINAL PIECE
May 3, 2010
The last piece of vacant lakeshore in Chicago is about to be developed.
McCaffrey Interests' Dan McCaffrey and Nasutsa Mabwa have worked for the last five years on the Chicago Lakeside Development plan, which was approved by the City of Chicago Plan Commission two weeks ago. The plan, which includes the area between 79th and 87th and from Brandon Avenue to the lakefront, will include new retail, residential, and park space on a former steel mill site.
The project is also a pilot for LEED-Neighborhood Development, with green elements including a stormwater filtration system, energy from wind, solar, and water power, and preservation of ore walls in the lakeside parks. In addition to extending the street grid east, the redevelopment will include the extension of Lakeshore Drive into the site, 6.5 miles of new bike paths, and new bus stops to make every part of the neighborhood a five minute or less walk to the bus. McCaffrey will develop the first phase starting in 2012, but is looking for developers to help build out the rest over the next few decades. |
