U of C Alums Keep Learning
MB Real estate's Jay Beadle, Jones Lang LaSalle's Craig McKesson and University of Chicago's Daniel Darnell and Brandon Breting
University of Chicago students, alumni, and guests gathered to hear â€œA Tale of Two Markets” at their fourth annual real estate conference Thursday. We snapped MB Real estate's Jay Beadle, JLL's Craig McKesson, and U of C's Daniel Darnell and Brandon Breting. Craig and Daniel were discussing their service in the Air Force (appropriate for Veteran's Day). Jay and Brandon have worked together on a data center at the University.
GGP's Adam Metz, U of C's Joe Pagliari, AMLI Residential's Stephen Ross, Waterton Associates' David Schwartz
General Growth Properties' Adam Metz is smiling like a man who's company came out of bankruptcy last week. (Makes sense.) He joined U of C's Joe Pagliari, AMLI Residential's Stephen Ross, and Waterton Associates' David Schwartz  before his panel. About 100 alumni and 100 students and guests attended. Adam says bankruptcy is rare when it comes to real estate, but the  enormity of GGP's problems didn't leave them with any other holistic solutions: “It would have been death by  1,000 paper cuts.”
Randy Mundt, Ken Riggs, Sam Chandan
Principal Real Estate Investors' Randy Mundt projects that 2011 will be marked by a dramatic improvement in the capital markets, though investors will still be hesitant over the results of the unwinding of Quantitative Easing II. His co-panelist, Real Estate Research Corp.'s Kenneth Riggs, says this cycle is the opposite of deja vu: Nothing like this has ever happened to us before. Real Capital Analytics' Sam Chandan says we have more information now than we ever have had before, but we've also made more errors in judgment than ever before, which means the way out of the recession is not clear cut.
