Trauma Center Is Linchpin Of U Of C Medicine's $270M Expansion
University of Chicago Medicine announced yesterday it's moving forward with a $270M campus expansion plan that includes reopening a Level 1 trauma center, something residents spent years demanding.
The plan, called Get Care, will also address lingering issues such as overcrowded emergency rooms and turning Mitchell Hospital (shown) into a 188-bed cancer care facility. U of C Medicine filed a Certificate of Need with the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board seeking approval.
If the plan is approved, U of C Medicine will relocate and expand its adult emergency department closer to the Center for Care and Discovery, where it can serve more patients and reduce wait times. The Level 1 adult trauma center will be housed next to the existing pediatric trauma service and Burn & Complex Wound Center.
