123-Year-Old North Side Church Likely To Be Demolished
A historic Andersonville church will likely be demolished now that it has sold to a developer.
The 123-year-old Summerdale Community Church at 1700 West Farragut Ave has a date with a wrecking ball after Ecodwell, the development arm of Dream Town Realty, bought the property for $750k, DNAInfo reports. Once a thriving church, Summerdale has fallen on hard times. Its congregation totaled 10 members before it decided to disband and transfer the property to a nonprofit, The Night Ministry, which provides temporary housing and healthcare to Chicago's poor and homeless. It intended to flip the property and use the proceeds to fund its mission.
Summerdale's site is zoned for detached homes and two-flats. Former pastor Ann James said Ecodwell will build two single-family homes on the site. Preservation is off the table for now: the church faced $250k in repairs. [DNA]
