Live-Work Apartment Development Set for Former Bronzeville School
The Chicago Board of Education agreed to sell a vacant school building in Bronzeville to a development group that wants to build live-work apartments on the site. Washington Development Group bought the former Anthony Overton Elementary building at 221 E 49th for $325k from CPS last week and will have to file for a zoning change to allow for building the live-work spaces. Washington Development's Ghian Foreman says he hopes the school, one of 50 closed by CPS after the 2012-13 school year, will remain a community resource with the redevelopment, DNAInfo reports. Foreman adds he wants to build shared amenities such as commercial kitchens into the space and expects the build-out to take a year to complete, once all city approvals are in place. [DNA]
