Planning Group Launches Initiative to Strenghten TOD Development
The Metropolitan Planning Council's new Grow Chicago aims to expand TODs beyond downtown, River North, River West and Chicago's hotter neighborhoods for development. The renewed call for TOD development comes on the heels of a report by MPC and the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy calling for broader zoning and financial incentives to attract more development near public transit stations. Grow Chicago notes that, while the city is losing population overall, people are moving to downtown and the surrounding neighborhoods in droves, and easy access to public transit is a major factor. The plan includes a "TOD calculator" showing the economic benefits of TOD planning in designated areas of development and a list of hot TOD developments across the city. (Check out ours here.)
