What do Cleveland and places like Sydney, Australia, Harar, Ethiopia, Malmö, Sweden, and Madagascar have in common? They are all on the recently published National Geographic's Best Trips 2018 list.

Cleveland is listed as No. 14 on the list of 21 places, just before Tetouan, Morocco, and just after Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

The organization and its magazine term the choices "our editors' top picks" that promise travelers new trails, local foods and vibrant wildlife. Only one other U.S. location is on the list besides Cleveland — the more traditionally tourist-oriented San Antonio.

National Geographic suggests Cleveland to celebrate an industrial city's revival.

The magazine also mentions the eight theaters on Playhouse Square, the indie-music venue Beachland Ballroom and "hip meat-lovers' restaurants," such as the Black Pig and the Plum. Hingetown and the Waterloo Arts District also get a nod.

The magazine's fun fact for Cleveland is that DJ Alan Freed popularized the term "rock 'n' roll" here, though it does not mention that he skedaddled to New York as soon as he could.
