WORK OF ART
December 13, 2010
We snapped the site prep going on at the Kimbell Art Museum for the 85k SF expansion project, which began in October. Kimbell director Eric Lee says workers have installed a fence and erosion controls and are relocating the utilities along Will Rogers Road. Trees and shrubs, many of which are unhealthy or nearing the end of their life expectancy, will be removed. Later in the building program, there will be a complete replanting and landscaping, the details of which have yet to be finalized. The low travertine wall located in front of the Kahn building’s yaupon-holly court will be removed during the prep phase but will be replaced exactly as before, he says. The Beck Group is building the Renzo Piano-designed museum, scheduled to open 2013. |
Last summer, we shot this image of the iconic existing building designed by Louis Kahn. The new building (at a $125M price tag) will be a separate structure located to the west of the existing building. It'll allow the Kimbell to exhibit most of its permanent collection for the first time while hosting major special exhibitions. The new facility will also provide studios and classrooms to better serve the museum’s education programs, and feature a 300-seat auditorium. And the new design will refocus attention on the actual front entrance. What? You’ve never walked in the front door either? You’re not alone. |
