Data center specialist Equinix is planning to build a $138M facility next to the existing 1.6M SF Dallas Infomart, which the company acquired for about $800M a year ago.

The expansion, which will include about 290K SF of co-location space, is slated for completion in 2020, the Dallas Business Journal reports.

Equinix considers the Metroplex a growth market.

“When we look at the market overall, it’s the second-fastest growing market in the Americas,” Vice President of Corporate Development and Strategy Jon Lin told the DBJ. “It’s the second-largest data center market in the Americas."

Besides the Dallas Infomart, Redwood City, California-based Equinix has a long-standing presence in North Texas, including facilities in Plano, Irving and Richardson.

Data center and cellphone tower REITs like Equinix are benefiting from the rapid growth in data usage led by e-commerce players and video-on-demand providers.

With the relentless growth in demand for data in recent years, Equinix has been able to grow by acquiring properties and expanding existing ones.

Besides Dallas, the company is at work expanding data centers in the Chicago, Hong Kong, Melbourne, New York, Paris, São Paulo, Singapore, Tokyo and Zurich metros.
