Liberty Mutual Insurance and its development team kicked off construction Wednesday of the insurance company’s 1M SF mega-campus at the corner of SH 121 and the North Dallas Tollway in Legacy West. The $325M project will accommodate up to 4,000 employees. Here’s Plano mayor Harry LaRosiliere, Liberty Mutual CTO Melanie Foley, Liberty Mutual CEO David Long and KDC CEO Steve Van Amburgh with the ceremonial shovels.

We snapped Plano city manager Bruce Glasscock with The Karahan Cos’ Fehmi Karahan. Fehmi is developing the Legacy West shopping center next door to Liberty Mutual. Steve tells us he’s most excited about the Shake Shack. Steve tells us KDC, Columbus Properties, JC Penney and The Karahan Cos collectively owned the vacant land where the project is being built. KDC is the owner and developer of Liberty Mutual’s project, but says Liberty Mutual has the option to buy its facilities at a later day. Steve says FedEx is just leasing its under-construction mega-project next door.

KDC has assembled OMNIPLAN as architects, Kimley-Horn as civil engineers, Studio Outside as landscape architects, LA Fuess as structural engineers, Telios as MEP engineers, and Balfour Beatty Construction as general contractors. We caught part of the project team by the Liberty Mutual rendering: here’s Balfour Beatty’s Pleas Mitchell, Liberty Mutual’s Sean Murphy, OMNIPLAN’s Tip Housewright (who is speaking at Bisnow’s DFW Retail event on Oct. 13 at the Dallas Marriott City Center), KDC’s Don Mills.
